Illustrator splines

Hey guys,

I imported an object from illustrator and im trying to give it depth using the bevel modifyer but when i does the object closes in the center.

Now let me try to explain this:

Its like a small circl inside a big circle and when i bevel i would like it to become donutish. but instead it just becomes a big circle.

How do i prevent or fix this?
Tell me if you dont understand.

Thanks!

there is a number of ways you could do this one of them is
modifying the imported spline so what you do is convert it to
spline if not so already and click on edit spline in modifier list
and go down the list of options to find the outline button
there adjust the slider to get an outline on the object and
apply the extrude modifier increase the extrude amount the
other way is to convert the object to editable poly then
remove the top and bottom polygon and add a shell modifier
or you could do it manually by insetting the top and bottom
polygons and then removing the center polygons then
select a border and shift drag it down to the bottom one
which would make the same results don't forget to weld
the vertexes...good luck my friend

also could you tell me how to import the AI file to 3d max
i used cs3 and tried to save the file in all kinds of AI format
from cs7 so cs3 with no luck while importing it to 3d max 9
how did you do it
