I find max is alot harder to learn than AutoCAD due to the sheer complexity of the program, but once you get into it, it has a hell of a lot better set of tools for 3D modelling and is the prefered choice of pretty much anyone with knowledge of both systems.
The way you draw in max is drastically changed when you use max,
i.e. solid modelling i AutoCAD you would usually union and subtract solid objects together and gradually build the model up, whereas in max you generally start with one cube or sphere and extrude/stretch/pull the vertecies,edges and polygons about expanding just that one object.
Its also widely advised that you stick to four sided faces when drawing max for the benefit of the smoothing modifiers (this ability is really only gained through experience) whereas AutoCAD doesnt use these rules, or smoothing modifiers come to that.
