High Poly Vertex Painting

I used to use Zbrush and in that i was able to paint my high poly model at its highest subdivision for maximum detail. I could then project this onto my low poly which had the UV co-ordinates applied and then turn it into a diffuse map.

Is this possible in blender or can you only vertex paint onto objects that have UV co-ordinates applied.

This might be a somewhat outdated technique and if there are better ways of doing this please could you let me know as i am very keen to learn as much as possible.

At the moment i have my high poly and low poly objects but do not want to vertex paint directly onto my low poly as the tri count is so low that it is near impossible to paint any detail into the texture.

Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.
