editing a picture

i am a noob and i am not even sure it this is possible...... is the a way ro delete a color right out of a picture.... basically if i had a picture of 3 red apples with a green background ..... what the easiest way to get the apple without the background

Hmmmmm

You might be able to set the green to transparent, but am not to sure.
