Red face Colors change when opening a GIF file

I have a small GIF file of a racing horse that I want to add to another larger image.

Since I want to duplicate it several times, I opened it in a new layer. However, when it is displayed, the colors have all been changed. Attempts to invert the colors don't help, they are still incorrect, although different.

If I open the file in another application and copy it to the clipboard, then go back to GIMP and paste it into a new layer, the colors are correct, but the area I marked as transparent in the original GIF image are shown as black instead of having the underlying image show through.

I'm new to GIMP, so be nice
