Help with brushes

hi, i am a paint.net user who just recently switched to gimp. the two programs are VERY different, and i am having some issues. First, i downloaded some brushes, but when i go to use them, the image comes out blurry. i know this is to be expected the larger you make the brush, but is there an easy way to sharpen it up or am i doing something wrong? what is the best way to sharpen the brush image so that the edges are crisp and clean? any help is appreciated.
