Neon help

Hi all,

I have been doing some image processing of medical images using GIMP. I randomly discovered that the edge-detection neon filter is incredibly useful to me when finding breaks in speckled images.

The other edge detectors tend to "ring" and introduce crazy high frequency effects.

Could someone explain or expand on what Filters->Edge-Detect->Neon actually does. I guess it is gaussian smoothing and using standard Sobel edge detectors but I am not sure.

I tried going through the source but it's a bit intense.

So any ideas.
Any help is truly appreciated
