Some filter options are disabled/unavailable?

Hi,

I was trying out some tutorials at school and I find it difficult when the filter I'm supposed to use (pixelate, for example) is not available. I was wondering if the more experienced ppo (u guys) would know why. The photoshop version is 8.0.

Another question is that whenever i create a new document, it defaults to grayscale. What would be a usual setting if i was to try out these tutorials?

THX!

A lot of filters require that you have selected an area of the image before you can use the filter. So make sure you had something selected (using the lasso or whatever) and also make sure you're on the right layer as a blank layer won't work either.. then try the filter.

Hey halokitty, the most common cause for a number of filters being unavailable is that you are in the wrong color mode. Go to Image/Mode and make sure you're in RGB Color and 8Bits/Channel.
