Trying to select part of an image and paste..

Hello. I'm new to Gimp. All I want to do is select part of an image with the lasso tool and past this into another image. In Photoshop it was no problem. Now every damn time I do this, the whole image comes in. Why? I cant afford photoshop. Please help. Thanks.

Johnny

Ensure the image you're trying to copy from is on its own layer and not on a floating layer.

If it is indeed on a floating layer, just press the new layer button in your layers panel and it'll turn into a static layer.

I am also trying to select part of an image and i can with lasso or something like that. But what I would like to do is select part of an image with a specific shape. It is not a parallel shape at all, I'm lost on how to do that. I can select the shape I want on another image using the scissors, making it a floating section....then i get lost.

Any help would be appreciated.

thank you

Once you get to the floating layer, either right-click it and choose "new layer" or click the new layer icon at the bottom of the layers panel.

Either way will turn your floating layer (which is essentially a selection) into its own editable layer.
