Creating a dot matrix effect around a path

Hi All,

I am very new to Illustrator and am looking for some advice.

I have imported a dwg composed of only straight lines and arcs:

I need to apply a dot matrix style pattern all the way around the shape.

I have played about with creating blends. Does anybody have any ideas?
