Gradient mesh zoom view gets grainy

Just starting to experiment with gradient mesh - maybe someone can help me. I've edited the gradient mesh so it looks perfect to me, but when I zoom out, at medium zoom the mesh patch outlines become visible. At far zoom, the gradient mesh looks grainy. All the mesh points are black with variable opacity.

I haven't found anything about this on the web, which makes me suspect I'm just misusing the tool...

A related issue is, when converting a linear (grey) gradient into a gradient mesh using object->expand, the gradient immediately changes color (gets darker/grainier).

Would attach the .ai file, but don't see how to.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It has to do with your mesh settings/resolution and the size of your files. You can see the bounding boxes but these are just editable guides and wont affect your final. The grainyness is just caused by your resolution and the amount of information within the mesh. If everything looks okay at "100% scale" then you can be confident in your gradient mesh.
