How to intersect two groups of paths

Hello,

I am trying to follow a tutorial where a number of thin rectangles are overlayed by a splat shape and then intersected so the thin rectangle pattern takes on the splat shape.

Try as I might, I am utterly unable to recreat the effect, though I did this successfully a year ago so I know it is possible.

Also, I tried a clipping mask and the whole thing turned transparent.

To be totally concise, I need to put the splat group on top of the lines group and intersect them so the lines group takes on the shape of the splat group and everything extra disappears (splat fill + lines outside of splat).

Any suggestions would be most welcome!

The easiest way would be to use two layers. The top layer is your "splat" shape and the bottom are your rectangles. Slect the splat shape, set the inside to No fill and the outside to a Solid color ( white is transparent) combine the layers and you're good to go!
