Cookies: Make this your landing page

Hello all,

I'm working on a website job which has an initial landing page for all first time visitors which links to a number of site sections. Each section has it's own section homepage and the client has requested that each of these pages has a link saying "make this my landing page" so that returning visitors will be taken directly to the information most relevant to them. I assume this is a javascript cookies situation however for all my searching i have been unable to find any information that might lead me in the right direction. If anyone has any knowledge on how to do this, of any threads I've missed, or tutorials I would be so very grateful. Hope someone can help.
