Determine Date Added of a Linked Document

I am not sure if this is possible to do with javascript or not, so any suggestions or recommendations would be much appreciated.

My problem is that we are constantly pushing pdf documents out to our website for our users. The user is requesting that next to the document link in a web page that we have something identifying when the document was added to the website. For example: " Last updated February 28, 2008." This is not the document that is currently active in the web browser. This would be a document that is hyperlinked on the page. Can this be done using javascript? If so, any help in the script would be much appreciated. I know this can be done using other means, but can it be done using javascript?
