Maya Selection Problem

Hi Guys,
I am fairly new to Maya and can not overcome this problem.
When selecting faces for extruding, vertexes are also selected .
I tried to go to default mode, but whenever I select vertexes or faces yellow outliner shows. I must have switch something by mistake .
I tried to attach screen shot to show the problem , but there is no option for image ....
