Problem applying material to faces

I know how to apply materials to faces, fairly simple, select faces right click, apply material. Problem being(and I'm wondering if this is common) when I try to apply a specific material to the faces I have selected on a portion of a model I'm working on, I go to apply it and it applies random materials to different sections of the model. Kinda seems like a glitch. I only selected a group of faces on the toe and it applied a different color to the rest of the toe and another color entirely to the leg and just above the waist, another color. I wish I could upload a pic here without uploading it to some other site first, but best I can tell, I can't.. But if people can't figure out what I mean, I will work on getting a pic up as an example.
