FrontPage - hyperlink problems
update:
now my only real problem is not knowing how to change the width of the hyperlink column, because as it stands, some of the text is too long and gets cut off. original post: i've searched for tutorials, and i found the base of this site, which linked me to the forum... long story short, the guy who did web design here is gone, and i've taken over the task of updating- which turned into re-doing the website completely. I updated the old site in frontpage, using HTML code (only way i know how to do it), but only the basics. Now they'd like to completely change the layout to be more efficient. anyway, i've selected a base from 1 of 8 options in frontpage for a decent, yet simple layout. the problem i'm having is that i can't link an htm file into it and have it come up in the same window (i'd like to keep a tool bar on the side for navigation without having to click 'back'), more like this forum. All i can seem to do is link it externally so it pops up in another window. The only thing i can think of is to re-make the page in front page so i can keep the tool bar. I did a search on the forum but couldn't find anything... thanks in advance, ~Shelby oh, a quick example of an htm page im talking about URL - Portfolio - Commericial - 69 swift st |

the other problem i'm having is that i can't change the width of the links (its a specified column size, so some of my text runs over the edges. if i right-click on any of the tags, it highlights all of them and i have yet to find a way to edit how big they can be

yeah, I know how to edit HTML code. I think the problem is that I've selected a pre-designed template; widths and sizes are already selected... so when you go into the html tab, they don't show up as hyperlinks should, there's hardly any code that comes up at all other than a sub-level link that references a picture.

I believe this is your first problem. There are many other things out there that are more effective for the results you want rather than frontpage. I learned in school, well not learned, but heard, and was given examples that dreamweaver is better than frontpage. I would reccomend trying dreamweaver, as it has alot of good features included. I think i know what you mean, but by toolbar, I am lost. I know that your can do frames and put the links on one page and the actual page on the other part, then they will both open on the same page. Only problem then is getting the links from frame A to open in frame B. I'm not too sure but I think it can be done. |

i figured that part out... if you have a tool bar on the side / top, whatever, if you select the main area of the page, then go to Insert - file, you can put whatever you want in it and keep your tool bar. now my only real problem is not knowing how to change the width of the hyperlink column, because as it stands, some of the text is too long and gets cut off. |

FrontPage
Beware the FrontPage Templates!!
They APPEAR to be helpful, but they aren't! What you are trying to create is, indeed, a frame. The way to get the hyperlink to show up in the 'window' of your page is to change the target. When attempting frames in frontpage, you better have the aspirin at the ready. Also, consider using css to create new pages. As a designer, I steer clients away from the use of frames because after a few stray clicks, you can find yourself lost in frame in a frames sort of situation. It may also have implications with your SEO. If, after all of this, you still want to use them, use the f1 help for info about frames. This is just what I recall from memory, but the help system should walk you through the steps. I'd be happy to take a closer look if you need help getting started. As for the dreamweaver suggestion, I agree wholeheartedly. No HTML generator is perfect, but you can do a lot more, more easily with Dreamweaver. In Frontpage, what you see is not always what you get. Good luck! Michele |
