Hello. Im an old hand at PSP from PSP7 !!!!! I now have pspX6 and after a few years not doing any I am stumped at a simple task....Misting a picture.
From what I remember:
Promote pic to background layer
use freehand and select the portion of pic you want misted

Nothing happens....what am I doing wrong. My project is urgent for a fundraiser and I need help!! Thank you in advance

I use psp 9 and 'misting' seems to refer to extreme feathering around a portion of an image. To draw your attention to that part.

Promote pic to background layer

FWIW 1: Promote usually means upgrade. I will promote this Background Layer to a Raster Layer.

Quote:
use freehand and select the portion of pic you want misted

FWIW 2: This will delete what you want to keep.

------------------

Two ways to select the misted area of your pic.

1) Select what you want misted and click delete.
2) Select what you want to keep or stand-out and click invert and then delete.

My test image was 360 x 540**, w/ Background layer.
For no background color: Open your image, click Layers > Promote Background Layer.

Selection Tool Options Palette:
(Press F4 if options are not visable)

Selection type: Ellipse
Mode: Replace
Feather: 50
Anti-alias: checked

Click the center of the area you want to stand-out and drag the Ellipse big enough to include it. Now click Selections > Invert, then Edit > Clear, then Selections > Select None - or press Ctrl+D (to Select None) or right click inside the image window (to Select None).

The result should be a gradual misting or fading, from the color to white, for a Background image; or color to transparent for a Raster image.

**The end result of this misted or feathered effect is directly related to the size of the image and the amount of feathering you set; on the Selection Tool Options Palette.

For an image twice as big, 720 x 1080, the feathering would need to be 100; to get the same effect.

When you're done click, Edit > Save As:

If it's a Background (Flattened) image and you want to keep the original as it was, add something to the name or change the Format to PNG; PSP. Then click Save.

If it's a Promoted (Raster) image, with a transparent background, you MUST change the Format to PNG or PSP. Then click Save.
It can't be saved as a JPEG and the Format change will create a new image; leaving the original as it was.
