Few Beginner's Questions

Hi,
I recently stumbled on tutorialized and I'm loving every second I get to browse tutorials, specifically Visual Basic 6 related tutorials. I have a few questions concerning direction that I'd like to pose and I figure forums are always the best place to ask, so here it is:

My goal is to eventually write a type of Point of Sale and inventory program. Where a user can scan a barcode into a database and assign values related to price and quantity. Of course this would be something that is updated with every sale or inventory shipment.

1. Is visual basic going to be able to provide an effective way of creating a program such as this.

2. Of the plethora of tutorials out there, which should I steer myself towards, after beginner's lessons.

3. I have a background with BASIC, I used to program a great deal years ago using QBASIC so I understand the transition to VB is easier to follow, is this true?
