Getting started with web design

Hi folks,

Thanks for looking in. I am in need of some advice as to where to find some tutorials for web design rather than HTML / CSS development.

i have over 10 years in the industry, but it is as a developer (HTML, CSS, JS, PHP) and I would like to expand my knowledge fo the creative side of the business.

I can use Photoshop and Fireworks (my preferred tool), as I use these for cutting up designs for sites from desigenrs. However, i need to know what I should be learning about to improve my design skills, as when I try and put a site together myself, it always tends to look the same, very blocky.

Could any designers out there point me in the right direction for what I need to learn about? Color theory, textures, fonts? Google is my friend, but not knowing what to look for makes i difficult. Any book recommendations would be good too if you have these, I have got copies of the Zen Garden book and a couple of other like it, but these are not really the things I am looking for as I know what is a good design and a bad design, I just need direction as to putting it together,

thanks in advance,
Paul

Thanks, but that doesn't really help. I would like pointers as to what I should be looking for in the tutorial section.

what i do is go to different websites like ones that make templates ect, and view over there templates, as in like how its design is and what other people create, this helps me make new themes and some people have really good ideas and some have articles on there work and how it was created, hope this helps.
